DURHAM, N.C. –Duke junior tight end Cooper Helfet has earned ACC Player of the Week honors after helping the Blue Devils to a 55-48 victory over Virginia this past Saturday. It marks the second straight week the Kentfield, Calif., native garnered the league’s offensive lineman of the week citation.
In the win over the Cavaliers, Helfet caught seven passes for a career-high 122 yards and one touchdown against Virginia’s defensive unit that ranked second in the ACC in pass defense entering the week. Five of his receptions produced first downs – including a 30-yard touchdown grab – and he averaged 17.4 yards per catch.
On Duke’s game-winning, 91-yard touchdown drive in the final two minutes, Helfet caught two passes for 30 yards and two first downs. In addition, he helped open holes for Duke’s rushing attack which totaled 230 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns. The 122-yard effort ranks as the fifth-highest single-game receiving yardage total by a tight end in Duke history.
Others earning the conference weekly awards were North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates (Offensive Back), Virginia Tech linebacker Bruce Taylor (Defensive Lineman), Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel (Defensive Back), Virginia Tech running back David Wilson (Specialist) and Miami quarterback Stephen Morris (Rookie).
