DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe announced on Tuesday the naming of Walt Canty, Ross Cockrell, Sean Renfree and Conner Vernon as team captains for the 2012 season. The four individuals were elected by their teammates.
Canty, a senior safety from Roebuck, S.C., will start in the defensive secondary for the third consecutive year and enters the season as Duke’s active leader in tackles with 153. Last year, he finished second on the squad with 87 total stops while ranking tied for third in the ACC in caused fumbles per game (0.25) and 14th in tackles per game (7.3).
Cockrell, a redshirt junior cornerback from Waxhaw, N.C., joins Canty as a three-year starter in the defensive backfield. In 23 career games, he has amassed 116 tackles, four interceptions and 16 pass breakups.
Renfree, a redshirt senior quarterback from Scottsdale, Ariz., has been named a team captain for the second straight season. He begins his final season in Durham with career totals of 601 pass completions in 948 attempts for 6,352 passing yards and 32 touchdowns. Renfree is Duke’s career leader in pass completion percentage at .634 – a mark that ranks seventh-highest in ACC history.
Vernon, a senior wide receiver from Miami, Fla., is a two-time second team All-ACC pick who enters the 2012 campaign as the NCAA’s active leader in pass receptions (198) and receiving yardage (2,675). He stands 35 catches and 843 yards short of setting ACC career records, and has caught at least one pass in 35 straight games – the longest active streak in the country.
Duke opens the season on Saturday at 7 p.m. versus FIU in Wallace Wade Stadium. Season tickets are available online at www.GoDuke.com/tickets or by calling the Duke Athletics Ticket Office at 919-681-2583.
