Chaparral beats Saguaro 35-20 on the Cox 7 game of the week
Recap
It was Saguaro that struck first in this heated rivalry but Chaparral responded with 35 unanswered points in the first half to build big enough lead to hold the Sabercats off as Chaparral rolled to their second straight win over Saguaro on the Cox 7 Thursday game of the week.
Saguaro's Kash Robinson ran in from 24 yards out on their second possession of the game. Chaparral's Gary McKay responded with an 84 yard kickoff return TD to knot it at 7.
After forcing a punt, Chaparral QB Brad Schencker hit
Josh Aganon
on a screen pass that Aganon took 53 yards to the house. 14-7.
Saguaro then fumbled the ball inside the 10 yard line and Chap capitalized on a Schencker TD run on 4th down. 21-7.
Schencker ran in for another score later in the 2nd quarter and Chaparral RB Emerson Carrethers scored to end the half giving CHS a 35-7 halftime lead.
Neither team scored in the 3rd, although Saguaro was close. A penalty negated a score and Saguaro's 4th down attempt from the 2 was stuffed.
The Sabercats did get 4th quarter scores from Gena Adams and
Luke Rubenzer
but it was not enough for the comeback.
Chaparral's Sam McReynolds hit a 31 yard field goal to give us a 38-20 final.
Bottomline
Saguaro made a little run in the 4th quarter but it was too little too late. Saguaro had their chances but penalties killed them, the Sabercats fumble the ball that led to a score, had a pass to the 5 called back and a score called back.
Give it up for Chaparral. Everyone counted them out when they were 1-3 but they finished the regular season strong and look ready to make a run at a 4th straight title.
Game Ball
Good overall performance by the Firebirds. The defense played tough, led by
Jake Roh
. Chaparral QB Brad Schencker managed the game very well and had 2 rushing TDs and threw 1.
