Syracuse already has two linebackers in the fold for their 2013 class in Devan Carter and Marqez Hodge. However, the Orange are not done going after that position. Recently, they offered junior college linebacker Joe Walker, who says his versatility is what makes him so productive.
"I think I'm pretty fast," the 6-foot-3 prospect described. "I think I'm pretty smart in learning schemes. I play outside linebacker mostly but when I'm down on the line I play middle linebacker. So basically I can play every linebacker position."
His recruitment has come more into focus recently with a new offer. Walker has several schools talking to him right now, but only three have offered.
Walker has started planning his visits which will be critical in his decision. He is looking to get to know more about each school that has offered.
"I have a visit to Duke planned," Walker explained. "I leave this Friday. And then I have a visit to A&M on Thanksgiving break. The Syracuse trip, he just offered me a couple nights ago so we haven't really worked that out yet. It will be sometime after Thanksgiving, I know that. I'll definitely get up there to visit though."
Walker said it was Greg Adkins that made the offer over the phone. It was the first time the two had a chance to speak, and he was excited to hear from Syracuse.
"It was Coach Adkins," Walker recalled. "He just told me, ‘hey we're offering you right now.' He liked my film and thinks I would be a great fit for them because I play multiple positions at linebacker.
"I was extremely excited (when Adkins offered). I know Syracuse is a great school, so I was excited."
The Los Angeles Harbor product says he doesn't have an official list, but the three that offered him are standing out. Currently, there is no timeframe for his decision. Walker wants to take his trips, see how they go, and then discuss them with his family and coaches.
Currently, he is building his relationship with Coach Adkins and Syracuse. He has developed a relationship with Texas A&M and Duke as they have been in touch with him for a while. There will be, however, some things he will be looking for while on his visits.
"I think school is huge and football is just as big," Walker said. "School and football, and then just a feel for the school will be big. I know the schools that offered me all have great academics and all have great teams. I'm still learning about each one though."
Distance from home will not play a factor in Walker's decision at all. He says he's lived in the area his whole life, and "it is time to get out of here."
