The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Ricks did not expect the offer.
"My coach told me about the offer," he said. "It was kind of a surprise, but I've worked so hard and felt like I earned it. I was overwhelmed – very excited that Virginia Tech was my first offer because it's a D1 school and that's what I was looking for."
Ricks said Hokies' have impressed him.
"I just like the way they play football and I like the coaches," he said. "They have really good coaches."
Over the next several months, Ricks will take some visits.
"I'm going to East Carolina's junior day in February," said. Ricks. "I'm also thinking about going to junior days or spring practices at Duke, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and UVA."
Ricks finished his junior season with 26 carries for 292 yards and four touchdowns on offense. Defensively, he had 40 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
