Name: Johnell Barnes
Weight: 170 pounds
Position / Projected Pos: CB / WR
Ranking: Three-star cornerback, ranked #38th nationally
Recruiting Recap: Barnes committed to Duke in June during a whirlwind college visit tour. He picked the Blue Devils over Bowling Green, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Hawaii, Iowa State, Northwestern, South Florida, Wake Forest, and West Virginia.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Dunbar (Fort Myers, FL) standout took his official visit to Duke in December month and said it only solidified his commitment.
“It was very pleasing. I had a great time, my parents had a wonderful time,” he said.
“I just felt like I was welcomed. That’s where I wanted to be and the coaches accepted me. It just felt like home.”
Scouting Report: "Exceptionally quick, Barnes is young for his grade and is just coming into his own physically. At 6'0, 170 his ceiling is at cornerback right now, but we think he ends up getting much bigger. Long frame with a body to add weight, this is a competitor who plays with the game with a lot of savvy. Former quarterback that made big plays at wide-out all season long. Capable of making defenders miss in space. Has the loose hips to play corner." - Greg Voght, Scout.com
"Johnell Barnes certainly has the ability to make a splash at Duke as a freshman on either side of the ball. He will be one of the better athletes in Durham once he steps foot on campus." - Jamie Newberg, Scout.com
Projected 2013 Role: Barnes will likely factor in as a true freshman. He is considered the top receiver commitment in the class, and is expected to avoid a redshirt.
