Jake Kite ready for Duke

Though he's likely to redshirt, Virginia athlete Jake Kite is preparing to challenge for playing time this Fall for Duke. The three star safety prospect out of Roanoke spent the weekend in Durham watching his future teammates take part in the annual Blue-White game, and then spoke to TDD about the experience.

"I thought the team looked really good out there," said Roanoke (Va.) Hidden Valley standout Jake Kite. "It was a lot of fun to see the game, and to see guys from my class who have already enrolled and are playing. Guys like Quay Mann and Parker Boehme both had really good showings I thought."

Kite, who is described by Scout.com as "a hard-nosed football player that flies around on defense" is projected to start his career at safety, but could move to the strike position in Duke's 4-2-5 scheme. Before any of that happens, however, Kite knows he'll have to see how he stacks up at the collegiate level.

"I talked a little with Coach Collins about that this weekend, but mainly we just talked about making plans for the summer. I know I'm heading down to Duke on May 15th, and I can't wait to get to Duke."

As with most of his classmates, Kite says he's ready to get on the field, but he's battling a shoulder injury that is just now healing.

"I've been working out for a while trying to strengthen my shoulder ever since I was cleared after surgery. I'm actually just starting to get back at the weights, but I've been doing a lot of running to stay in shape."

Overall, the transition to college is something Kite says he's got mixed emotions about.

"I am excited, but there is a lot to be learned before I'm ready to go fully. I am definitely looking forward to getting back on the field, because it's been a while. I am actually a little bit nervous, but mostly I'm anxious to get started."

Kite was the fourth member of the class of 2013 to commit, choosing Duke over offers from Ohio and North Carolina State, as well as interest from Illinois, Stanford, East Carolina, and Pittsburgh.
