A day after classmate Tanner Stone was lost for the season with a broken ankle, Duke's Casey Blaser suffered a broken bone in his hand, and will require surgery. The procedure is expected to be performed on Thursday morning. No timetable has been set for Blaser's return.
The loss of Stone and Blaser has left the Blue Devil coaches scrambling for answers after the top two OL reserves have been injured in the last 24 hours. Following practice, the coaches were huddled in a staff meeting looking at options.
The solution appears to involve moving redshirt sophomore Sam Marshall over from defense to offense. Marshall will not only change sides of the line, but also jersey numbers. With the move to offensive tackle, the third year player will now wear No. 75, while freshman defensive tackle Mike Ramsay will take Marshall's vacated No. 99.
Marshall, who played both tackle and defensive end in high school, is listed at 6-foot-7 and 285 pounds on the official roster. In seven career appearances the Virginia native has played a total of 78 snaps.
