Three star TE visiting this weekend

Davis Koppenhaver

One of this weekend's recruiting visitors is three star TE Davis Koppenhaver of Newhall (Calif.) Hart High. The 6-foot-5, 215 pound prospect spoke with TDD about his upcoming visit and his overall process timeline before boarding the plane to Durham.

"I am visiting Duke unofficially this weekend," said Davis Koppenhaver. "The coaches have talked with me about taking my official visit in December when the other commits and recruits come out so that I will have a chance to meet the other players. This week we have a bye week, and I wanted to see the game day atmosphere at Duke before making my decision."

Koppenhaver measures out at 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds with a personal best forty time of 4.8 seconds. He's being recruited to bolster the Duke passing game.

"Right now at Hart I play receiver and tight end, and Duke wants me to play a kind of hybrid tight end."

Throughout his recruiting process, Koppenhaver has interacted with a number of coaches, but lately it's been more of a rifle approach from the Blue Devils.

"I get a lot of handwritten letters from the coaches, and we talk on the phone a lot. Lately I've been talking with both coach Ropers about once per week. With the recruiting process, my mom is the one who is helping me all through it. She's the one who is managing the calls and letters. I don't know where I'd be without her."

In addition to Duke, Koppenhaver has offers from Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, UNLV, Iowa State, Colgate, and Yale. Of that list, however, he does have favorites.

"Right now my favorites are Duke and Yale. I also like UCLA."

Duke's pitch is familiar to those who follow Blue Devil recruiting, but it's also one that is effective.

"They've mainly pitched the idea that they are the best mix of academics and football. I've been really impressed by the school of course, and the coaches are great as well. I've also been impressed with the stadium renovations that are beginning."

On the field, Koppenhaver admits he's not a complete prospect, but the potential is there and there's enough early career production to signal a continued rise in productivity.

"I want to improve on my blocking and my running after the catch ability. I feel like my route running and hands are the best part of my game. My route running allows me to separate from defenders faster, which will help at the next level. At Hart I've learned so much in the passing game and I feel like I am ahead of other players in my routes and knowledge of the game thanks to the coaching I've received."

In Week 2 for Hart, Koppenhaver had a big game against Santiago Corona High, posting eight receptions for 104 yards. Seven of the eight receptions resulted in first downs.

Koppenhaver is rated as a three star prospect and the No. 54 tight end in the country according to Scout.com.
