Despite being offered more than $40 Million dollars by the Los Angeles Lakers, head coach Mike Krzyzewski will be staying at Duke University sources confirmed to TDD early Monday.
Sources had hinted at the return as early 8:00 AM on Monday, however it was TheChronicle that secured the first comments on the record regarding Coach K’s plans.
"I can confirm that he's staying," Gary Melchionni, the father of player Lee Melchionni told The Chronicle. "He did call [my son] a little while ago and let him know that he was staying."
Krzyzewski’s decision likely signals the end of the road as far as making a jump to the NBA goes, as it’s hard to see any other team being able to offer him what Los Angeles had.
For several in the Blue Devil nation, the announcement comes as a huge sigh of relief as picturing Duke without Krzyzewski was too painful to fathom.
“It’s terrific news,” said VCU head coach Jeff Capel. “I always thought he would stay at Duke. I just couldn’t see him in Los Angeles.”
An official press conference will take place this afternoon.
