Nelson, Paulus, McRoberts Named Captains

Sophomore Josh McRoberts

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced that junior guard DeMarcus Nelson, sophomore guard Greg Paulus and sophomore forward Josh McRoberts were named team captains for the 2006-07 season.

Paulus and McRoberts become the first sophomores to be named team captains in the 102-year history of the Duke men's basketball program.

Nelson, one of three upperclassman on the Duke roster, is coming off an injury-plagued sophomore campaign. The Elk Grove, Calif., native averaged 7.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while playing in 24 games, including seven starts. Nelson shot 45.2 percent (61-of-135) from the field and 41.0 percent (25-of-61) from three-point range a year ago.

Paulus, an ACC All-Freshman team honoree last season, averaged 6.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game a year ago while starting 33 of 36 games. He joined Ed Cota (North Carolina, 1997), Jeff Jones (Virginia, 1979) and Kenny Anderson (Georgia Tech, 1990), as the only players to lead the ACC in assists as freshmen. Paulus also set a Duke freshman record with 15 assists in a 104-77 win over Valparaiso on Dec. 18. The previous freshman assist record was 13 set by Bobby Hurley and matched by both Jason Williams and Chris Duhon. The Syracuse, N.Y., native was also named to the ACC All-Tournament second team after helping the Blue Devils to a second consecutive ACC title.

McRoberts, an ACC All-Freshman team and ACC All-Tournament second team selection in 2006, posted the team's top field goal percentage (.605, 115-of-190) last season. He was also third on the team in scoring at 8.7 points per game and second in blocked shots (46) and rebounding (5.3 rpg.). The Carmel, Ind., native reached double figures in scoring 15 times, including a season-high 17 points against North Carolina on Feb. 7. He posted five double-figure rebounding efforts, including 12 rebounds in a Feb. 11 win over Maryland. McRoberts recorded double-doubles against Bucknell (14 points, 10 rebounds) and George Washington (14 points, 13 rebounds).

The Blue Devils open the 2006-07 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 12 at home against Columbia in the opening round of the College Basketball Experience Classic. Tip-off for the season opener is set for 8:30 p.m.
