Wright Ready For Final Season

Ever since arriving in Durham, Jomar Wright has been a key component in the Blue Devils' passing attack. After an injury cost him most of his sophomore season, Wright returned in 2006 to lead the team in receiving as a junior. Now, as a senior leader, Wright is hoping to end his career on a positive note.

After returning from the knee injury, Wright was introduced to new positional coach Scottie Montgomery - a coaching change he believes has helped him morph into one of the team's best weapons.

"Coach Montgomery has been really great since he came back to Duke," Wright told TDD. "He played the position in college and the pros, and has really showed us a lot. He's really tough, but he's someone we all love playing for."

The "we" Wright makes reference to is a crop of receivers that may be among the best in Durham since Montgomery's playing days. In addition to Wright Duke returns Eron Riley and Raphael Chestnut to the starting lineup, while adding redshirt freshmen Sheldon Bell and Jeremy Ringfield. Still, the senior understands he needs to take a bigger role in the group.

"I think that's what Coach Montgomery and Coach Roof are looking for from me. I don't need to dominate the group, but I do need to help the young guys be accountable for getting better each time out. It's part of being a senior - you need to be a leader too."

In order for Wright to have a successful final campaign in Durham he'll need to get the ball - which should be easier in 2007 with an experienced quarterback and, more importantly, a beefed up offensive line.

"Thad looks a lot more comfortable back there this Spring. I think he's got an easier job now that he's gotten the experience under his belt. The offensive line is also really coming along, and that will give him some more time to make more reads, which gives us more time to get open."

Clearly Wright's goal for the team centers around breaking the program's losing streak, and taking steps to completing the turn around began by the coaches when Roof took over. But, individually, what is he hoping to improve upon and accomplish in 2007?

"I want to make more plays for the team. When we need something, I want to be the kind of player who can make it happen. I also want to get better in the vertical passing game."
