Singler & Paulus Too Much For Terps

A career high from freshman Kyle Singler combined with some timely shooting from point guard Greg Paulus is enough to propel Duke past Maryland, 77-65. The victory moves the Blue Devils to 10-0 in ACC play and 22-1 overall, while dropping the Terrapins to 16-9 overall and 6-4 in league play.

Singler, who bested his previous high point total of 25 (against Marquette), ignited a late Duke run after Maryland had closed to within a basket at 57-55 with 6:57 remaining in the game by beating his defender to the baseline and converting the contested lay-up. From there the Blue Devils built an 11-2 run to put the game out of reach.

After building an 11 point halftime advantage, the Blue Devils went stone cold from the field, going over four minutes without a basket as the Terrapins steadily drew closer. A subsequent three minute scoreless drought allowed Maryland to reduce a 16 point game nearly all the way behind strong play from point guard Greivis Vasquez.

The fiery sophomore, who routinely engaged the crowd, finished with a team best 25 points, but got little help from senior James Gist who followed up a six game stretch of 22 points per game with a 3-of-11 shooting performance and just nine total points on the night. Fellow frontcourt starter Bambale Osby finished with 13 for Maryland, which fell to 6-4 in ACC play and suffered only its second loss in the last nine games.

In addition to leading his team in scoring, Singler also grabbed a team best seven rebounds. Joining he and Paulus in double figures were sophomore Jon Scheyer (13 points and six rebounds) and senior DeMarcus Nelson (12 points and five rebounds).

Duke returns to action Sunday night against Wake Forest in Winston Salem.
