DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University head football coach David Cutcliffe announced on Thursday the addition of four program captains -- Greg Akinbiyi, Cameron Goldberg, Eron Riley and Glenn Williams -- to join the four team captains elected during the preseason.
"These four young men have exemplified throughout the season the qualities of leadership that we look for within our program," Cutcliffe said. "Their effort, selflessness and overall commitment to the values of our program have enabled us to take steps forward this year. We are proud to name Greg, Cameron, Eron and Glenn as program captains."
The four captains chosen by the squad in August include junior Vincent Rey and seniors Re'quan Boyette, Tielor Robinson and Michael Tauiliili.
Akinbiyi, a senior defensive end from Miami, Fla., leads the Blue Devils in both tackles for loss (13.5) and quarterback sacks (5.0) while contributing 50 total stops and two fumble recoveries. A senior tackle from Lutherville, Md., Goldberg headlines an offensive line unit that has helped Duke decrease its number of sacks allowed from 45 in 2007 to just 24 this season.
Riley, a native of Savannah, Ga., who has caught 56 passes for 630 yards and seven touchdowns in 2008, will finish his career ranking among Duke's all-time leaders in pass receptions, receiving yardage and touchdown catches. Williams, a Baltimore, Md., product, has posted 56 tackles, two sacks and one interception as the Duke defense has made significant improvement in scoring defense (-10.1), total defense (-68.5), rushing defense (-31.2) and passing defense (-37.3).
Duke closes the year on Saturday at home versus North Carolina.
