In all there were 62 players named to the watch list for an award given annually to the nation’s best defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
Oghobaase, a Houston, Texas native, has also been named to the Outland Trophy Watch List, the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list and the Lott Trophy Watch List. He enters his final season at Duke with 128 career tackles, 29 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks. He has started in 36 consecutive games for the Blue Devils and ranks among the ACC active leaders in sacks (2nd) and tackles for loss (3rd). A 2009 preseason All-ACC selection, Oghobaase is tied for ninth in school history with 11.5 sacks and needs one tackle for loss to move into Duke’s top-10.
A total of nine ACC players were among the 62 players on the list. Oghobaase was one of three ACC defensive lineman, joining Wake Forest’s Boo Robinson and N.C. State’s Willie Young.
Each week the FWAA will choose a Bronco Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week. It the player is not on the watch list, his name will be added. A list of five finalists will be announced on Nove. 18 or 19. The recipience of the award will be announced at the annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy banquet, held Dec. 7 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
