DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke head coach David Cutcliffe announced on Wednesday the team's captains for the 2009 season, as voted on by the student-athletes. The Blue Devils utilized individual game captains for the first 11 contests of the year.

Thaddeus Lewis and Vincent Rey were named captains of the 2009 squad with Re’quan Boyette, Vince Oghobaase, Ayanga Okpokowuruk and Leon Wright earning recognition as alternate captains.

Lewis, a native of Opa-Locka, Fla., has served as a game captain in a team-high seven of 11 games this season. He owns or shares 48 school records heading into his final collegiate game, including 25 career, 17 season and six game marks. Lewis has enjoyed his finest season in 2009, throwing for a career-best 2,943 yards and 17 touchdowns with six 300-yard passing performances including a career-high 459 yards and six total touchdowns at N.C. State.

“It means a lot, letting me know that what I have done around here has gained the respect of my teammates,” said Lewis. “It is pretty special to be a captain going into the last game of my career on Saturday.”

Rey, a Far Rockaway, N.Y., product, is a team captain for the second straight year. He leads the team with 87 tackles to go along with 6.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, three pass breakups, one quarterback pressure and one fumble return for 16 yards and a touchdown against N.C. Central. Rey is one of just 13 players in school history with over 300 career tackles and owns the school record with three fumble returns for touchdowns. He served as a game captain five times this year.

“This is one of the biggest accomplishments because it means I have the respect of my teammates,” said Rey. “I am very happy that I have had a positive impact on people in our lockerroom.”

Boyette also was selected by his teammates as a captain for the second straight year. Despite missing the entire 2008 season, he has gained 1,200 rushing yards and seven career touchdowns. Oghobaase has missed time due to injury in 2009, playing in seven games while recording 33 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and three quarterback hurries. He ranks fifth all-time at Duke with 14 sacks and seventh with 35.5 tackles for loss.

Okpokowuruk leads the Duke squad with five sacks and seven tackles for loss this season while starting all 11 games at defensive end. He also ranks in the top 10 in the ACC with two caused fumbles. Wright is tied for third in the ACC with five interceptions to go along with seven pass breakups. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the fourth quarter at Army and received national player of the week honors from the Walter Camp Foundation. Wright has 10 career interceptions to rank tied for sixth in school history.

Saturday’s game against Wake Forest will be televised by Raycom Sports with kickoff scheduled for 12 noon.
